The grand jury that investigated the death of Len Bias turns its attention this week to allegations of drug use and scholastic problems in the University of Maryland’s athletic program.
Coaches, athletic department officials and the parents of Bias were among those expected to testify this week.
Prosecutor Arthur A. Marshall Jr. has said that once he completed the investigation of events surrounding the death of the University of Maryland basketball star, he would ask the grand jury to look into allegations that other athletes at the school were using drugs.
He also said he wanted a probe of the scholastic performance of athletes, especially those in basketball and football, which make the greatest demands on the time of student athletes.
In earlier comments, Marshall said he wants to find out what Maryland basketball Coach Lefty Driesell and Bias’ high school coach, Robert Wagner, told players during the hours after Bias died.
Marshall said he was particularly interested in whether either coach told players not to talk to police or advised Bias’ roommates to clean up their dormitory suite.
Giving advice to remove evidence or to refuse to cooperate with police could be grounds for charges of obstruction of justice.
Driesell has refused to talk about the case.
