At least 2,000 opponents of the government of Pakistani President Zia ul-Haq have been jailed during the last two weeks, police reported. A police statement denied press reports that 7,000 opposition activists had been jailed in Punjab province. The statement said that about 1,000 people are under arrest there and that another 1,000 are under arrest in the southern province of Sind. Meanwhile, a few peaceful protests were reported across the country as the Movement for the Restoration of Democracy, an alliance of 11 opposition parties sought to sustain its drive to oust Zia.
