‘Rome’s Command Silences the Hierarchy’
Father Sweeney’s statement regarding the 74% decrease in the number of young men in seminaries in 1983 compared to the number in 1968, fails to mention the fact that the draft was in force in 1968 and those attending seminaries were deferred from military service. Because of this all seminaries, Catholic and non-Catholic, were filled.
As soon as the draft ended, a large number of these candidates for the clergy discovered that they really did not have a calling to the religious life.
