Midwest Roundup : Taylor Gains 259 Yards to Lead Cincinnati, 45-38

Reggie Taylor, a senior from Lynwood, rushed for a career-high 259 yards in 36 carries and set up the clinching score with a 51-yard run to lead the University of Cincinnati to a 45-38 nonconference victory over Miami (Ohio) University Saturday at Cincinnati.

Taylor helped Cincinnati (2-0) overcome a 14-0 deficit by scoring the Bearcats’ first touchdown on a 24-yard, first-quarter run.

Phil Insalaco’s 29-yard field goal pulled Cincinnati even, 17-17, on the last play of the first half.

Miami (1-1) tied the score, 31-31, when Todd Snyder returned a blocked punt 16 yards for a third-quarter touchdown. But Cincinnati scored the first two touchdowns of the fourth quarter to take a 45-31 lead.

Quarterback Danny McCoin hit sophomore wide receiver Roosevelt Mukes with a 26-yard touchdown pass, and then Taylor’s 51-yard run set up McCoin’s third touchdown pass, a 1-yard toss to tight end Daryl Huber.

The teams combined for 1,173 total yards and 58 first downs.

McCoin completed 18 of 24 passes for 268 yards without an interception.

George Swarn had 178 yards in 23 carries for Miami. Temple 49, W. Michigan 17--Paul Palmer rushed for 175 yards and 3 touchdowns in the first half as the Owls defeated the Broncos at Kalamazoo, Mich.

Palmer, who carried 20 times, was rested in the second half after helping Temple (1-1) to a 28-0 halftime advantage.

The senior tailback had first-quarter touchdown runs of 55 and 34 yards, then ran 3 yards for a score with 17 seconds left in the half.

Toledo 30, Wichita St. 13--Tailback Kelvin Farmer rushed for a career-high 195 yards and scored 3 touchdowns on runs of 3, 10 and 1 yards, as the Rockets (1-2) defeated the Shockers (1-1) at Toledo, Ohio.

Central Michigan 34, Idaho 21--The Chippewas won at Mount Pleasant, Mich., despite a 353-yard passing performance by the Vandals’ Scott Lineham. Rodney Stevenson scored twice and rushed for 156 yards to lead Central Michigan.
