Insurance companies refuse to provide nuclear accident coverage to Americans living near atomic power stations even though plant owners are financially protected, according to a study released in Washington. The study by the Environmental Policy Institute, the U.S. Public Interest Research Group and the Union of Concerned Scientists revealed nuclear power plants carry more than $1 billion in insurance to cover their properties. The study also said the Price-Anderson Act, a 1957 nuclear insurance law Congress is about to renew, limits suits against firms blamed for nuclear accidents.
