The World Wildlife Fund climaxed its 25th anniversary celebrations in Assisi, Italy, with a ceremony in the medieval church of St. Francis, patron saint of ecologists. Representatives of Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism and Islam gathered against a backdrop of the famous frescoes of the life of St. Francis, who lived in the 13th Century and was known for his love of animals. Britain’s Prince Philip, president of the fund, said the group wants the world’s religions to join in the campaign for the survival of endangered animal species.
