San Bernardino County supervisors approved an initial $35,000 investment in a computerized system intended to issue flood warnings for county waterways. The system, which is expected to be ready for testing this winter, consists of 37 gauges set up along the waterways. The gauges will constantly monitor the water levels and generate information that a computer can use in combination with historical data to predict how much water can be expected from any specific storm. The new system is also expected to predict needs for evacuation or emergency protective measures. The prospect of a major flood would trigger an automatic alarm.
