Break-dancing, the dance that sprang up on the streets of American cities, has been officially recognized in the Soviet Union, which will hold a national break-dance festival next weekend.

The first “all-union break-dance festival” will be held in Tallinn, the capital of Soviet Estonia, on Oct. 11 and 12, the Tass news agency said.

“Break-dancing, rock ‘n’ roll and the revival of the step now are the dances that are most popular among young Muscovites,” Tass said.

The news agency said hundreds of young people took part in a modern dance festival held recently at the Fountain cafe in Moscow’s Olympic Village.

“Young people showed virtuoso technique in robot-style, low-break, including rotation on the floor, and handstands, and made difficult acrobatic jumps,” Tass said. “Every performer danced impromptu since no one knew the music in advance.”
