Soviet, U.S. Debating Teams Will Meet
The Soviet Union National Debate Team will discuss cooperation between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. in the peaceful exploration of space as an alternative to the arms race at two Westside colleges this weekend.
The Soviets will debate three members of the newly formed Pepperdine Speech Forum at 8 p.m. Friday in the School of Law auditorium on the university’s Malibu campus. The debate is open to the public.
“I think ‘Star Wars’ will probably be involved in the discussion,” said Ray Buchanan, a Pepperdine communications professor who advises the school forensics team. Soviet and Pepperdine team members will answer questions from the audience after the debate.
On Monday, the Soviets will debate a student team at Loyola Marymount University in Westchester. The program will start at 3 p.m. in St. Robert’s Hall. Reservations are necessary and can be made by calling 642-3033 or 642-2778.
The Soviet team is on a brief tour of the United States as part of an annual exchange program sponsored by the Washington-based Speech Communication Assn.
