3 Cities in Running for Denomination’s Offices
The United Church of Christ has narrowed its possible choices for a headquarters city to Cleveland, New York and St. Louis, officials of the 1.7-million-member denomination have announced.
The denominational headquarters are now at three addresses in New York City. A final site recommendation will be made in March and voted on by the church’s General Synod next summer.
Coincidentally, St. Louis has also survived early rounds of a Presbyterian Church (USA) search for a new national church office site. The 3.1-million-member denomination is also considering Fort Worth and Kansas City, Mo. In January, a committee will nominate one city for consideration by the denomination’s governing General Assembly in June.
Indianapolis, whose city officials a year ago actively courted several Protestant bodies considering moves, was eliminated by both denominations in the latest round of cuts.
