The Education Department said it is sending out more than 27,000 “fraud alert” brochures to help educators and bankers detect phony applications for federal student aid. “The purpose of this brochure is to stop the fraudulent use of student financial aid before it happens,” said Education Secretary William J. Bennett. The brochure spells out the basic eligibility requirements for federal aid and provides a checklist of telltale signs of a fake application. More than 5 million college students are getting $12 billion in aid through the department’s loan and grant programs this year.
