El Camino Bids for Bowl Berth
The race for the South Coast Conference football title and a possible bowl bid may be the hottest in the state and El Camino College is in the thick of it, despite a 3-5 record.
Five schools have a shot at a piece of the championship with two games left. Golden West and Cerritos are tied for first at 4-1. El Camino, Fullerton and Pasadena are tied for third at 3-2.
Cerritos plays at Golden West and El Camino is at home against Pasadena at 7:30 Saturday night.
Don McKenzie, commissioner of the South Coast Conference, said the league has not devised a method for breaking a tie for the title. Potato and Pony bowl organizers can select any teams they want.
If El Camino wins its last two games (against Pasadena and Golden West) and Fullerton loses one, the Warriors would be tied with Cerritos and Golden West--and would have wins over both. Still, a tie for the championship would probably not be attractive enough for bowl organizers to choose El Camino because it would still be 5-5 overall.
El Camino Coach John Featherstone said his team is “fired up” to salvage the disappointing season with a bowl berth. “We’re controlling our own destiny,” Featherstone said. “We could still go to San Diego.”
