New York City-based F. W. Woolworth, the nation’s eighth-largest retailer, reported a 29% rise in net income for the third-quarter ended Oct. 31. Sales for the quarter also were higher than the same period last year. In addition, the firm said specialty-store merchandise sales were up 14% and general merchandise sales rose 6.2%. Domestic sales were up 7.6%, while foreign sales, aided by a weakening U.S. dollar, gained 11%.
