Anaheim : Vendors Gain in Latest Draft of Proposed Law

Street vendors won more concessions Wednesday from the city under the latest version of an ordinance geared to regulate them.

In the most recent proposal, the vendors would be allowed to use non-amplified music to attract customers but would not be allowed to use it while they’re stopped.

Some residents in predominantly Latino neighborhoods have complained that the volume of vendors selling ice cream and produce created a circus-like atmosphere with noise, traffic and litter.

But the vendors have charged that the proposed regulations appeared to discriminate against the Latino community, which sells and buys the products.

Various versions of the proposed rules have been brought before the City Council throughout the year. The proposals also were the target of a lawsuit by the vendors.
