Cypress : Golfers File Petition for Vote on Industrial Park
A group of golfers filed a petition Tuesday seeking a special election on the development of an industrial park that will mean the destruction of the Los Alamitos Golf Course.
The group has criticized the City Council for its Oct. 14 decision to allow Hollywood Park, owners of the golf course, to build the 169-acre project. Other residents have expressed concern about increased traffic and congestion.
The petition--filed one day before today’s deadline--has 4,176 signatures, or about twice as many as necessary, said Deputy City Clerk Lillian Haina.. Mayor Otto J. Lacayo said the council can reverse its decision or call for an election.
But a special meeting may be called before the next scheduled council meeting, on Nov. 24, to avoid handing the issue to a new council that will include two new members, Lacayo said. William Davis and Margaret Arnold are scheduled to be sworn in Nov. 24.
The signatures filed Tuesday represent about 19% of the city’s voters.
