El Salvador’s leftist guerrillas said they killed or wounded 50 government soldiers in heavy fighting in a 24-hour period. They also damaged two army helicopters with ground fire, the rebel Radio Venceremos said. The Salvadoran armed forces press office labeled the rebel report false and said there was a brief clash in Chalatenango province in which one guerrilla was killed. Local commanders reached by telephone said an operation is under way in the province.
