The National Aeronautics and Space Administration rejected requests by a number of news organizations for the release of pictures of the shuttle Challenger’s battered crew cabin taken on the floor of the Atlantic Ocean. Requests for the pictures, which reportedly show some of the seven crew members’ personal effects, were made under the Freedom of Information Act. However, the space agency cited Exemption 6 of the act, which says that release of medical and personal information “constitutes a clearly unwarranted invasion of personal privacy.”
