The Nicaraguan government indicated that it may pardon captured American mercenary Eugene Hasenfus for his role in supplying U.S.-backed contras with weapons. The Sandinista People’s Tribunal trying the American is expected to hand down a verdict and sentence today or Monday, according to attorneys in the case. “The question of whether to pardon will be a later decision” by Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said. “This is a country in which pardons have been given.” Defense attorney Enrique Sotelo Borgen said his client should be sentenced to no more than two years if found guilty.
