WFC Roundup : Passe Throws Two Touchdowns to Lead Montana Past Portland State
Brent Pease of Montana passed for two touchdowns Saturday to lead the Grizzlies to a 35-14 non-conference football victory over Portland State.
The victory was a sweet one for first-year Montana Coach Don Read, who led the Grizzlies against the Vikings for the first time since leaving Portland State for the Big Sky Conference.
Read finished his first year at Montana 6-4. Portland State’s Pokey Allen, in his first year with the Vikings, finished 6-5.
Portland State opened the scoring Saturday, taking the opening kickoff and driving 56 yards in 10 plays. Quarterback Chris Crawford scored on a 2-yard run.
Montana bounced right back on a 14-yard run by Jody Farmer, then took the lead on a 3-yard pass from Pease to Tony Lambert.
Montana’s Greg Nygren then snagged an errant Crawford pass, and four plays later John Huestis ran 3 yards to give Montana a 21-7 lead.
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 36, Santa Clara 24--Quarterback Robert Perez completed 17 of 27 passes for 209 yards and one touchdown to help lead San Luis Obispo.
Before the game, fifth-year Cal Poly Head Coach Jim Sanderson announced his resignation. He finished his head-coaching career at Cal Poly with an overall record of 26-27.
Santa Clara senior wide receiver Kevin Collins caught five passes for 79 yards to give him a Santa Clara career record of 2,740 yards receiving.
Cal Poly improved its record to 5-5 overall and 3-3 in the league while Santa Clara fell to 4-7 and 2-4.
