Jupiter Island edged Allez Milord by a head in a duel between British horses to win the Japan Cup, the country’s only international horse race.
Flying Pidgeon, the only entry from the United States, was 12th.
Jupiter Island, a 7-year-old bay, was timed in 2 minutes 25 seconds, a Japan record, for the 2,400-meter (about 1 1/2-mile) race before 70,000 spectators at Tokyo Race Course. The winner earned $650,000.
The previous mark of 2:25 3-5 was set by Mairzy Doates of the United States in the first Japan Cup in 1981.
