Infant Abandoned in Store Restroom
A 4-day-old boy was found abandoned Saturday morning in a women’s restroom at the Broadway department store in Panorama City, Los Angeles police said.
Shopper Pauline Camarillo of Van Nuys discovered the infant wrapped in a red bath towel at 9:15 a.m. in the second-floor restroom in the store at 8333 Van Nuys Blvd., Sgt. Charles Meter said.
The baby, who is being called John Doe No. 1, was taken to a store security office, where police were called. He was taken to County-USC Medical Center.
Just before Camarillo found the baby, a woman believed to be in her mid-20s was seen carrying what appeared to be a small child in a red towel near the entrance to the restroom, Meter said.
The baby, who weighs about five pounds, is in fair condition but is having trouble keeping food down, hospital spokeswoman Adelaida De La Cerda said.
He will remain at the hospital for observation before being placed in a foster home by the county Department of Social Services, she said.
