Women’s Basketball Roundup : USD Defeats Portland in Consolation
Jane Gilpin scored 16 points and Julie Evans added 15 Saturday night to lead the University of San Diego to an 85-57 basketball victory over Portland in the consolation game of the Idaho Tournament at Moscow, Ida.
USD forced 25 turnovers and outrebounded Portland, 47-29.
“Our pressure defense was the key to game,” USD Coach Kathy Marpe said. “Our defensive play set up a lot of our offense.”
USD, which committed 35 turnovers in its first-round loss to Washington State Friday night, had 24 turnovers against Portland. Still, the Toreras opened a 43-35 halftime lead. Then their defense wore down Portland in the second half.
USD (1-1) will compete in the Fresno State Tournament at Fresno next weekend before returning home to meet Portland State on Dec. 11.
