Redondo OKs Taxi Fare Hikes
REDONDO BEACH — The City Council unanimously approved increases in taxi fares to $1.60 a mile from $1.40 and raised to $18 from $12 an hour the fees taxis can charge for traffic delays or waiting for passengers.
United Checker Cab had notified the city it was raising fares to offset self-insurance costs. The increases are the first since 1981 and are justified, according to Assistant City Manager Ray Griest. Los Angeles, Manhattan Beach, Torrance and Long Beach also have approved the increase, the report said.
City Manager Timothy Casey said the city has never denied a fare increase and that he is not sure if the city can regulate them.
The council also voted 5 to 0 to introduce an ordinance allowing taxicab companies to be self-insured.
