Top-Seeded Krishnan Turns Back Carlsson in South Australian Open

ADELAIDE, Australia —  No. 1-seeded Ramesh Krishnan of India advanced to the quarterfinals of the $97,000 South Australian grass courts tennis championships Thursday with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Johan Carlsson of Sweden.

Upset-minded Michiel Schapers of the Netherlands defeated Matt Anger, 7-5, 6-3, in another match, and Bill Scanlon beat Bruce Derlin of New Zealand when Derlin suffered a knee injury in the first set with Scanlon leading, 4-1.

Schapers, who upset Boris Becker of West Germany in the second round of the Australian Open last year, said of that victory: “Everybody tells me about Becker, Becker, Becker, but it’s just one day. You have bad days and good days, and I had a good day and I beat him. It’s no big deal.”
