Up to 1,800 minks from Nova Scotia and Quebec are estimated to have died during shipment last week to China, an Air Canada cargo supervisor says.

Gerry Simpson, who works for the airline in Halifax, said last week that the deaths occurred despite extra precautions that were taken in shipping about 9,000 minks from Halifax and another 3,000 picked up at Montreal for the flight to Dalian on Christmas Eve.

“There was probably a 10% to 15% mortality rate,” he said. “I haven’t seen the final report about the cargo, but I suspect they died from the heat.”
