The World : Iran to Free Iraqi POWs
Iran announced that it will soon release 100 disabled Iraqi prisoners of war and that it is considering freeing 16 Egyptians it said were captured fighting alongside Iraqi troops. Tehran radio said the POWs will be handed over to the International Red Cross but did not give a date for the release. There are no accurate figures for the number of soldiers captured in the war that began in 1980. Meanwhile, in the Persian Gulf, a Liberian tanker was reported attacked by Iraqi warplanes and set afire near the main Iranian oil terminal at Kharg Island. Lloyd’s of London said the 61,000-ton Matterhorn was set ablaze but gave no further details.
