The Nation : Envoy Fund Rules Altered
The State Department outlawed the use of private funds for entertainment at American embassies. Deputy Secretary of State John C. Whitehead said the ruling was made because Americans who donated money to entertainment funds may have done so to gain influence. The policy change came a month after the U.S. ambassador to Switzerland, Faith Whittlesey, was formally cleared by the Justice Department of charges of wrongdoing by accepting thousands of dollars from private sources and using the money at her own discretion.
