WINTER SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS
Kennedy 57, Inglewood 34--Tisa Rush scored 10 of her game-high 18 points in the third quarter to boost the Kennedy High to a nonleague victory at Inglewood. Kennedy (8-3) led by two points at halftime and outscored Inglewood, 20-8, in the third quarter behind the play of point guard Yolanda Lewis, who finished with seven steals and 10 assists. Forward Diane DeCree had 15 points and Felicia Williams had 15 rebounds for Kennedy.
Alemany 50, Palmdale 26--Jenny Beubis had 13 points and nine rebounds, and teammate Jennifer Kroll had 10 points and five steals for Alemany (11-3).
L.A. Lutheran 28, Montclair Prep 22--Forward Maricela Lopez scored 12 points and had 12 rebounds for L.A. Lutheran (3-5) in the Alpha League opener. Guard Peri Booth added eight points for L.A. Lutheran.
St. Genevieve 44, Agoura 32--Ann Baida had 16 points and 11 rebounds and teammate Elizabeth Morelos finished with 10 points and nine rebounds. for St. Genevieve. Agoura’s Lisa Little led all scorers with 21 points.
Hart 50, Canyon 14--Nicole Anthony had 13 points and seven rebounds, all in the first half, and teammate Marni Harris added 13 points and six rebounds for Hart (7-5).
Newbury Park 51, Thousand Oaks 50--Marlo Cormier and Christy Gellenbeck each scored 13 points for Newbury Park.
Oak Park 38, La Reina 27--Wendy Wootton scored a game-high 12 points for Oak Park (5-2) in the Tri-Valley League opener. Teammate Sharon Carson added 11. Katie Foery scored seven points for La Reina (0-5).
Campbell Hall 70, Providence 25--Maria Alba scored 26 points and Tracy Sylvester grabbed 23 rebounds for Campbell Hall in the Delphic League opener for both teams. Margaret Archer added 15 points for Campbell Hall.
Pilgrim 46, Simi Lutheran 33--Ngozi Ogbunamiri and Brandi Ruff scored 16 points apiece to lead Pilgrim in the Heritage League opener. Tanya Deukmejian led Simi Lutheran with 14 points.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Alemany 46, St. Francis 44--St. Francis missed a last-second shot as the buzzer sounded to end a 20-9 fourth quarter comeback with disappointment. Alemany had a 24-16 halftime lead but couldn’t hold off Bryan Duffy, who finished the game with 20 points. Shaun Thomas led Alemany with 11 points. Bill Lucid had 12 rebounds.
Saugus 71, Hoover 58--John Thomas scored 19 points and teammate Jeff Dorst had 18 points and 16 rebounds for Saugus (9-6) in a nonleague game. Rusty Morse added 16 points and eight rebounds for Saugus.
Harvard 72, Pater Noster 42--Steve Green scored 19 points for Harvard (5-3), which recorded 13 steals in the Santa Fe League opener.
Culver City 66, Burbank 60--Scott Garland scored 14 of his game-high 28 points in the final quarter to lead Culver City to a nonleague victory at Burbank. Bryan Chandler led Burbank (9-5) with 20 points.
St. Genevieve 58, Salesian 52--Reuben Aguirre led St. Genevieve (5-4) with 17 points. Teammates Marc Colon and Dion Contreras scored 11 and 10 points. Montclair Prep 59, L.A. Lutheran 29--Montclair Prep (4-6) shot 59% from the field in the Alpha League opener. David Sanger scored 13 points and had 12 rebounds, and Jeff Light had 12 points and 14 rebounds for Montclair Prep. John DeRouen added 12 points and six assists. Greg Dempsey had eight points for L.A. Lutheran (3-6).
Burroughs 78, Nogales 68--Burroughs (4-6) shot 81% from the free throw line and hit 11 free throws in the last quarter to complete a 43-26 second half comeback. Burroughs’ Tom Kelly led all scorers with 25 points and teammate John Johnson had 19.
Campbell Hall 80, Newbridge 29--Donnie Sakaida scored a game-high 26 points and Tim Jensen added 16 points and 13 rebounds for Campbell Hall (7-1) in a nonleague victory at Campbell Hall.
Bel-Air Prep 48, Faith Baptist 45--Treiben Edwards scored a game-high 15 points for Bel-Air Prep (6-5, 2-0) and Jon Yaker scored 14. Faith Baptist (0-1 in league) had four players who scored in double figures. Shaik Nabi and Jason Henderson scored 11 points each, and Rich Leon and David Hairston added 10.
Ventura Temple Christian 69, Viewpoint 42--Andy Telanoff led Viewpoint with 11 points, and Ali Banki scored 10.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Fresno Pacific 72, Master’s College 67--Despite Pete Coeler’s 22 points and Rocky Shipes’ 20, Master’s (1-13, 0-3) lost the NAIA District 3 game at Master’s. Coeler and Shipes also had 10 and 22 rebounds.
BOYS SOCCER
Westlake 1, Royal 0--Eric Wynalda scored the winning goal off a Cobe Jones assist for Westlake in the Marmonte League opener. Westlake goalie Chris Volk handed Royal (9-1-1) its first loss of the season.
