PCAA Roundup : Berry Hits 26 as San Jose St. Beats Fresno
Ricky Berry scored 17 of his 26 points in the second half to lead San Jose State to a 62-41 victory over Fresno State in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. game Saturday night at Fresno.
San Jose, 7-8 overall and 3-3 in the PCAA, pulled away from a 22-20 halftime lead with a 19-5 burst in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Berry scored eight points in the surge.
George Puou added 15 points for the Spartans.
Jervis Cole, the leading scorer for Fresno State (7-10, 2-4), suffered a minor concussion early in the second half and did not return to the game. Rene Ebeltjes led the Bulldogs with nine points.
Fresno State made just 28% of its shots, hitting 12 of 42 field goal attempts, while San Jose hit 48% from the field.
The defeat was Fresno State’s worst conference loss at home since 1971.
Utah State 73, Pacific 69--Mike Johnson scored 19 points, and Danny Conway added 18 as the Aggies knocked off the Tigers in a PCAA game at Stockton.
The Aggies (8-9, 2-4) shot 64% from the field in the second half to overcome the Tigers (7-9, 3-4), who had a seven-point lead early in the second half.
The Aggies took the lead for good with a 3-point shot by guard Reid Newey, one of three 3-pointers Newey hit in the second half.
Taking advantage of a four-minute Pacific dry spell, the Aggies built their lead to seven points with 3:51 left.
Pacific pulled to within two points twice within the final minute, but Utah State got two free throws each from Gilbert Pete and Kevin Nixon to stay in front.
Christian Gray had 28 points and Brent Counts added 17 for Pacific.
