The Nation : Machine-Teller Safety Bill
Rep. Mario Biaggi (D-N.Y.) introduced legislation to improve security at the nation’s 68,000 automated teller machines and to require the FBI to keep statistics on crimes involving them. Biaggi’s bill would establish federal security standards for such machines, require the FBI to report automated teller-related crimes in its Uniform Crime Report and increase penalties for crimes involving the machines. Federal financial regulatory agencies would decide what security measures to impose, but the bill suggests alarm systems, video cameras, controlled access and teaching consumers how to protect themselves.
