NHL Roundup : Jets Beat Rangers, 2-1; Road Unbeaten Streak Now 7

Dale Hawerchuk scored a goal and set up another Wednesday night at New York to enable the Winnipeg Jets to extend their unbeaten streak on the road to seven with a 2-1 victory over the Rangers.

Paul MacLean took a pass from Hawerchuk at 2:35 of the third period and scored his 24th goal to break a 1-1 tie. In a league where only three teams are above .500 on the road, the Jets are 6-0-1 in their last seven away from home.

The assist gave Hawerchuk who has 32 goals, a career-high 69 points.

Rookie goaltender Daniel Berthiaume continues to sparkle for the Jets. He stopped 26 shots, a number of them while thwarting seven Ranger power-play attempts.

The rookie has a 13-3-3 record this season.

Just before game time the Rangers announced that General Manager Phil Esposito would be acting coach the rest of the season because of Coach Tom Webster’s inner-ear problem. The Jets not only beat him, their General Manager John Ferguson got into an argument with Esposito after the game.

Ferguson apparently told a fan who was heckling Esposito to leave him alone because Esposito was a “rookie” coach. The two shouted at each other. They were separated before any blows were struck.

The Jets became the third team in the NHL to surpass 60 points this season. Edmonton and Philadelphia were the first two.

Philadelphia 7, Buffalo 4--Center Peter Zezel scored three goals and linemate Tim Kerr had two at Buffalo as the Flyers built a 5-1 lead in two periods and coasted.

Zezel scored 54 seconds after the opening face-off, then scored the last two goals of the game after Buffalo pulled to within 5-4.

Chicago 5, Toronto 0--Goaltender Bob Sauve turned in a spectacular performance at Chicago and Doug Wilson scored twice to give him all the help he needed.

Sauve stopped 45 shots, frustrating the Maple Leafs at every turn. The Leafs had at least 14 shots in every period.

Washington 2, Detroit 1--Mike Gartner scored his 300th goal early in the third period at Detroit to give the Capitals the victory. It was the seventh game in a row in which Gartner scored a goal.

Goaltender Pete Peeters stopped 28 shots to continue his jinx over the Red Wings. His lifetime record against them is 12-0-1.

Edmonton 7, Vancouver 3--The Oilers, who thought they had a victory Tuesday night at Vancouver only to wind up with a tie, took no chances in this one at Edmonton.

With Danny Gare scoring his first goal of the season and Wayne Gretzky getting four assists, the Oilers romped.

Gare, a one-time 50-goal scorer with Buffalo, has played in only 11 games this season.
