CALENDAR LETTERS : SPEED SKIMMING

David T. Friendly states that over each weekend movie execs read up to 15 scripts, with the average script being 120 pages (First Look: “Hollywood Weekend: Word-Working Time,” Jan. 29).

That is 1,800 pages each weekend. (Let us exclude the lady who professed to read 20 scripts--2,400 pages.)

Question: Are these the same executives who constantly complain that there are no good scripts around? This is like watching movies on your VCR with the fast-forward button depressed and complaining that there are no good movies around.

To put that 1,800-page count into perspective: “The Brothers Karamazov” is 940 pages and “The Complete Works of Shakespeare” (plus appendices and reading list) is 1,666 pages.

If anyone believes those clowns actually read 1,800 pages of scripts each weekend, and speak knowledgeably about them on Monday morning, next weekend I will send for their reading pleasure a brochure of my Florida swampland that overlooks my costume jewelry store.
