The Region : More Illegal Alatorre Financing Found
An audit has turned up at least $50,000 more in unlawful campaign contributions to City Councilman Richard Alatorre than was previously known, the Los Angeles city attorney’s office said. A court settlement last summer revealed that Alatorre’s 1985 council campaign got $80,000 in illegal financing. A new city audit raised the figure to at least $130,000, officials said. Alatorre last year agreed to pay a fine to settle a civil suit over the practice of diverting money from his Assembly campaign fund to his council campaign, in violation of city law. Officials previously had said they would continue their examination of Alatorre’s funds after the settlement and expected a close examination would turn up more unlawful contributions.
