Former Metropolitan Opera head Sir Rudolf Bing and his new wife--out of sight since he was ruled incompetent to handle his affairs last month--have surfaced on the Caribbean island of Anguilla, according to the British protectorate’s police commissioner. Joseph Norris Payne said he visited the couple Monday afternoon at a beach house they are renting. Bing, 85, and Carroll Douglass, 47--who now calls herself Lady Bing--were married Jan. 9 in Arlington, Va., but have not been seen publicly since Jan. 12, after they left a New York state court hearing on Bing’s competency. “He appears to be in good health; he appears to be OK,” Payne told the Associated Press. “There was nothing to cause us to feel that he was uncomfortable or under any stress, strain or pressure.” Payne said Bing, a British subject since 1946, may stay on the island “as long as he can support himself.”
