San Diego
The largest monetary gift yet to UC San Diego--$2 million--has been given to the campus by San Diego businessman Sol Price and his family to help complete the $18.6-million university center under construction on the campus. The center, scheduled for completion in 1988, will include the campus bookstore, a ballroom, several restaurants, recreation areas, a 500-seat theater and office space for campus organizations.
Price, a longtime San Diego resident and Democratic Party activist, is the founder of the Price Co., which operates the Price Club. UCSD Chancellor Richard Atkinson will recommend to the UC Board of Regents that the center be named the Price Center in honor of the gift. The center is being built without state funds.
