Kearny 60, St. Augustine 58--Chris Ortiz hit a pair of free throws with less than a minute to play to put Kearny ahead, 59-58 at home. St. Augustine’s Charlie Applegate led all scorers with 22 points. St. Augustine (16-8) outscored Kearny, 15-12, in the final period. Randy Robinson scored 15 points and Ortiz added 12 to lead Kearny (19-6).
3-A Mount Carmel 56, Mira Mesa 39--Trailing 17-6 after the first period, Mira Mesa narrowed Mount Carmel’s lead to 25-17 by halftime, but fell apart in the second half. No. 2 Mount Carmel (21-3) shot poorly from the line, hitting 2 of 11 going into the final period. The Sundevils outrebounded Mira Mesa, 41-35. Three Mount Carmel starters scored in double figures: Eric Olander (15 points), Tim Coleman (14 points and 14 rebounds) and Mike Wasserburger (13 points). Mira Mesa, the only team to beat top-ranked Morse, finished the season at 19-7.
Mount Miguel 61, Sweetwater 55--Mount Miguel rallied from a 28-21 halftime deficit at Sweetwater. Mount Miguel’s half-court trap defense forced Sweetwater into sloppy play in the second half. Mike Flores scored 26 points and Anthony Rivera added 15 for Mount Miguel (17-8). Mahlon Williams had 18 points and Sean Styles added 16 to pace fourth-seeded Sweetwater (15-10). Last season, Sweetwater eliminated Mount Miguel in the first round with a 88-48 victory.
GIRLS
3-A Santana 59, Madison 53--Madison, which trailed by as many as 16 points late in the game, fell short at Santana. “We ran out of time,” Madison Coach RaNae Seaman said. “If the game would have gone another quarter we might have won it.” Kathy Weathers led Madison (16-7) with 20 points and Monica Barrow added 17. Santana (20-4) survived despite losing its top scorer Leslie Ellis, who fouled out with six minutes left. Ellis finished with 18 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists, Barbara Bennett led Santana with 20 points and freshman Rebecca Aase added 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Point Loma 81, Fallbrook 47--All-American Terri Mann scored 47 points at Point Loma. Point Loma (29-0) will play the winner of tonight’s Mt. Carmel-Bonita Vista game in the semifinals.
2-A
Lincoln 61, Ramona 54--Lincoln outscored Ramona, 42-17, in the second half to rally for the victory at Lincoln. Five Lincoln players scored in double figures, including Maleeva Van Patton, who scored 23 points and grabbed 19 rebounds. Keisha Thomspon added 17 for Lincoln.
Briefly--In a 2-A quarterfinal, San Pasqual 37, Oceanside 28.
