Pacific Coast Tennis : No. 1-Seeded Team Defeated in Doubles Championship

In a day of upsets at the Pacific Coast Sectional Men’s Tennis Doubles Championship, two of the tournament’s top three seeded teams were eliminated during Saturday’s quarterfinal round at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.

The No. 1-seeded University of Texas team of Charles Beckman and Royce Deppe, which placed second at the NCAA Championships, was defeated by No. 7-seeded Curt Stadler and Chris Dunk of Newport Beach, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. La Jolla brothers Bruce and John Steel, seeded No. 16, eliminated No. 3-seeded Ted Sherman and Steve DeVries of the University of California, 7-5, 6-3. The Steels face Beckman and Deppe in this morning’s semifinal match.

The other semifinal match will feature No. 2-seeded Scott Melville and Rick Leach of USC against No. 4 seeded Brian Flowers and Woody Hunt of California. Saturday, Melville and Leach beat No. 10-seeded Doug Eisenman and Alex Nizet of California, 6-3, 6-4. Flowers and Hunt also defeated their opponents, unseeded William Moravec and Drew Denny of Cal State Long Beach, 6-3, 6-4.
