Former New England Patriot linebacker Rod Shoate was arraigned in Pawtucket, R.I., District Court on a robbery charge stemming from a gas station holdup, and then turned over to Massachusetts authorities to face a similar count.

A district court judge set Shoate’s bail at $50,000 and referred the Rhode Island case to a grand jury. Shoate was then arraigned on a fugitive-from-justice count. Shoate waived extradition to Massachusetts and was turned over to Massachusetts authorities.

Shoate, 33, was arrested Sunday after a Cumberland, R.I., gas station attendant reported that a man indicating he had a weapon in his pocket demanded money and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash, according to police.

Shoate was an All-American linebacker for the University of Oklahoma in 1974. The Patriots drafted him on the second round in the 1975 NFL draft. He was cut by the Chicago Bears before the start of the 1982 season.
