AFI FILM FEST: WEEK 2
L istings and commentary for Week 2 of the American Film Institute Film Festival of Los Angeles, which runs through March 26:

“Black and White” (France, 1986, 7:30 p.m.). From the country that nurtured De Sade comes this tale of a mild-mannered accountant who discovers pain is the only thing that calms his jangled nerves. The purveyor of his aberrant pleasure is a black masseur--harking back to the title. The film was also shot in black and white, and clearly director Claire Devers (a surprising winner of the best first-film award at Cannes) wants us to understand the situation is far from cut and dried. As a study of pathological behavior, her effort is deeply disturbing, appealing to a very select minority.
