AFI FILM FEST: WEEK 2

L istings and commentary for Week 2 of the American Film Institute Film Festival of Los Angeles, which runs through March 26:

“Disorder” (France, 1986, 5:30 p.m.). Screenwriter and “Cahiers du Cinema” critic Olivier Assayas debuts as director with this sober, sad tale of a rock ‘n’ roll band sliding inexorably into dissolution and death after three of them commit robbery and murder. Guilt predominates from the first moments. The film has a nice visual style that echoes Truffaut, Bresson and Nick Ray, and an incongruous but lovely classical scoring by Gabriel Yared. But it’s difficult to accept the characters: Rather than ‘80’s pop types, they sound and act more like inhabitants of a ‘50’s existential novel, ruminating on life’s emptiness, living under a permanent pall.

All AFI Film Festival of Los Angeles events will take place at the Los Feliz Theater, 1822 N. Vermont Ave., Hollywood, unless otherwise noted. Tickets are available at Ticketron, Teletron and at the box office one hour before show time. Information: (213) 520-2000 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
