Red Cross Appeals for Aid for Victims of Ecuador Quake
The Los Angeles Chapter of the American Red Cross has issued an appeal for financial aid to victims of a March 6 earthquake in Ecuador.
While initial estimates put the death toll at 300, Red Cross officials now believe that as many as 2,000 may have died. Particularly hard hit are the provinces of Napo, Carchi, Imbabura and Pichincha, where many bridges were destroyed.
Red Cross officials said international aid efforts have already raised $35,000 in disaster funds and brought in about $20,000 in supplies. But initial surveys, they say, indicate that more than $5 million will be needed.
Contributions should be sent to local Red Cross chapters or the Los Angeles chapter at 2700 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles 90057.
