NCAA Division I Women’s Roundup : North Carolina State Beats Villanova in Final Seconds

Debbie Bertrand sank a 15-foot jumper with nine seconds left to give 14th-ranked North Carolina State a 68-67 victory over No. 17-ranked Villanova in the NCAA East Regional Saturday at Villanova, Pa.

Shelly Pennefather had 27 points and 10 rebounds for Villanova (17-14), and Lynn Tighe added 16.

Annemarie Treadway had 14 points for N.C. State (24-6).

Old Dominion 76, North Carolina 58--Donna Harrington collected 21 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Monarchs past the Tar Heels at Chapel Hill, N.C, in the Southeast Regional.

The Monarchs (18-12) trailed, 44-42, at halftime, but took control with a 15-8 run in the first 14 minutes of the second half.

Dawn Royster had 18 points and 10 rebounds for North Carolina (19-10).

Rutgers 78, Duke 64--All-American Sue Wicks had 23 points and 11 rebounds to lead the fifth-ranked Lady Knights past the Blue Devils at East Rutherford, N.J.

Duke cut the Lady Knights’ lead to 58-52 with 4:02, but Rutgers scored seven straight points, five by Telicher Austin, who had 17 points.

Chris Moreland led the Blue Devils with 22 points.

Auburn 92, Illinois 58--Mae Ole Bolton had 19 points and the second-ranked Lady Tigers ousted the Illini in the Mideast Regional at Auburn, Ala.

Bolton’s sister, Ruthie, added 14 points for Auburn (30-1) and Linda Godby added 12.

Angie McClellan had 20 points for Illinois.

Louisiana Tech 82, Northwestern 60--Nora Lewis scored 16 of her 24 points in the second half and the Lady Techsters downed the Wildcats in the Midwest Regional at Monroe, La.

Tory Harrison added 17 points for the Lady Techsters (27-2), who have won 16 straight games, and Teresa Weatherspoon had 12 points and 11 assists.

Kelly Byrne had 14 points for Northwestern (20-10).

Georgia 82, Kansas 51--Katrina McClain had 23 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to lead the Lady Bulldogs past the Jayhawks in the Midwest Regional at Athens, Ga.

Carla Green added 20 points for Georgia (27-4).

Shawna Waters had 14 points for Kansas (20-13).

Ohio State 76, Oregon 62--Tracey Hall scored 18 points, and the Buckeyes eliminated the Ducks in the West Regional at Eugene, Ore.

Laurie Landerholm had 17 points for Oregon (23-7), while Jody Strine added 15 for Ohio State (25-4).
