Kawasaki won a bid for New York subway cars.
The New York City subway system picked Kawasaki of Japan to build 200 cars for $230 million. Westinghouse-Amrail, a French-American consortium, is building 425 cars for the subway, and officials planned to buy 200 more from it without competitive bidding. Kawasaki objected and asked to be considered for the job. Westinghouse-Amrail had priced the 200 cars at $1,012,000 apiece while Kawasaki bid $985,000.
