Tennis Roundup : Wilander, Three Other Swedes in Quarterfinals
Mats Wilander routed Australian Mark Kratzmann, 6-0, 6-2, Thursday to join three other Swedes in the quarterfinals of the $315,000 Belgian Indoor tennis tournament at Brussels.
Anders Jarryd of Sweden defeated Andrei Chesnokov of the Soviet Union, 6-2, 6-3. Sweden’s Jonas Svensson and Jan Gunnarson qualified Wednesday for the quarterfinals.
In other matches, Boris Becker of West Germany struggled past Slobodan Zivojinovic of Yugoslavia, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4; John McEnroe downed Thomas Hogstedt of Sweden, 7-6, 6-1, and Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland rallied to beat Mike Leach, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Zina Garrison needed only 64 minutes to defeat Carling Bassett of Canada, 6-3, 6-1, and advance to the quarterfinals of the $150,000 Virginia Slims of Washington tournament at Fairfax, Va.
Top-seeded Hana Mandlikova eliminated Patricia Hy of Hong Kong, 6-1, 7-6. Hy held a 4-1 lead in the second set before faltering.
