Tennis Roundup : McEnroe and 3 Swedes Advance
John McEnroe and a trio of Swedes, headed by Anders Jarryd, who upset top-seeded Boris Becker of West Germany, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, won quarterfinal matches Friday in the $315,000 Belgium Indoor tennis tournament at Brussels.
Today, Jarryd will face McEnroe, a 6-3, 7-5 winner over Switzerland’s Jacob Hlasek, while Mats Wilander, a 7-5, 6-3 victor over Israel’s Gilad Bloom, will play Jonas Svensson, who downed compatriot Jan Gunnarsson, 6-3, 6-3.
Top-seeded Hana Mandlikova picked apart Kathy Rinaldi’s serve in a 7-5, 6-0 victory that moved her into the semifinals of the $150,000 Virginia Slims of Washington tournament at Fairfax, Va.
Mandlikova, of Czechoslovakia, will face fellow countrywoman Helena Sukova today. The other semifinal will match Americans Barbara Potter and Zina Garrison.
Sukova advanced by beating Lori McNeil, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1; Potter overcame West Germany’s Sylvia Hanika, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6, and Garrison eliminated Ann Henricksson, 6-2, 6-2.
