The Philippine government has declared open season on Communist assassins in Manila, a spokesman for President Corazon Aquino said. “You cannot just gun down law enforcers in public and then forget the whole thing,” spokesman Teodoro Benigno said. Officials have blamed the recent murders of 12 policemen in metropolitan Manila on rebel hit squads known as “sparrow” units. Benigno’s comments came hours after police killed two suspected members of a “sparrow” unit in raids on alleged Communist safehouses.
