Kenny Bernstein broke funny car drag racing’s 5.40-second barrier on three consecutive quarter-mile runs and won the Winston All-Stars championships at Texas Motorplex in Ennis, Tex.

Bernstein, 42, of Newport Beach, Calif., outran Tom McEwen of Fountain Valley, Calif., for the $30,000 top prize in the quickest side-by-side race in funny car history.

Driving the Budweiser King Buick LeSabre, Bernstein was clocked in 5.368 seconds with a finish-line speed of 266.35 m.p.h.

McEwen, driving the Kodiak Pontiac on a one-race basis for Raymond Beadle, was caught in a career-best 5.412 seconds at 231.95 m.p.h.
