San Diego
Two spills Tuesday dumped more than 10,000 gallons of sewage into the San Diego River and Lake Hodges.
An estimated 7,500 gallons of sewage flowed into the San Diego River after a sewer line became clogged by tree roots, the San Diego County Health Department said.
The spill occurred about 11 a.m. in the 2400 block of Fleetwood Street when the sewage overflowed through a manhole and into the San Diego River. Quarantine signs were placed at Avenida Del Rio near the Fashion Valley area, said Lyn Wallis, a county senior health information specialist. Additional warning signs were placed along the area in Ocean Beach where the river enters the sea.
Repairs were made about 1:30 p.m., and tests of the water will be done today, Wallis said.
Meanwhile in north San Diego, officials said a blocked sewer main spilled about 3,000 gallons of sewage into a small creek that empties into Lake Hodges.
That spill occurred about 11:30 a.m. in the 18000 block of Polvera Way and flowed into the lake at a rate of 5 gallons per minute until a city water utilities crew stopped the flow late Tuesday evening.
Warning signs have been posted for 300 feet on both sides of the spill where the creek enters the lake. Water sampling will begin today to determine when the water quality reaches a safe level.
