Investigators for the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health are looking into complaints that workers have become ill from exposure to toxic chemicals at San Diego’s Air Force Plant 19 operated by the Navy and General Dynamics. The plant was fined recently for mishandling suspected carcinogens. Institute toxicologist William Albrecht said blood samples from workers and air samples will be examined next month for possible polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). A General Dynamics spokesman said tests last year by Cal/OSHA and the Navy failed to turn up evidence of airborne PCBs.
