China accused Vietnam of invading a disputed island in the South China Sea and warned Hanoi that Beijing reserves the right to recover the territory. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman demanded that Vietnam withdraw its troops from Bojiao Island in the Spratly Islands, which the Chinese call the Nansha Islands. The Spratly group, lying between Vietnam, the Philippines’ Palawan Island and the northwest coast of Borneo, are claimed by China, Vietnam, the Philippines and Taiwan. The Spratlys, mostly low-lying and uninhabited, are thought to be surrounded by oil deposits.
